CHEMICAL PEELS 101
What is a chemical peel?
Patients who have never heard of this treatment before will want to know, WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL AND WHY SHOULD I GET ONE? A chemical peel uses ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids and enzymes to accelerate the cell turnover rate (CTR) and stimulate collagen production. Peels address issues like acne, fine lines, sun damage or pigmentation, and also help produce smoother, more even-toned skin. The acids or enzymes work by breaking up the bonds that hold together the aged and sloughing skin, thereby speeding up exfoliation and leaving your skin smooth, hydrated and glowing.
When & how did chemical peels originate?
The chemical peel is one of the oldest cosmetic procedures in the world and was performed in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome to help people attain smoother, more beautiful skin. This would be achieved by putting everything from sour milk & wine to fruit & vegetables on the skin. Today, chemical facial peels are popular because they offer nearly immediate results and can be performed as a quick & simple outpatient procedure.
What are the different types of chemical peels?
Light Chemical Peels
Light chemical peels are used to treat fine wrinkling, areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation, and acne. The solution used for light chemical peels is usually comprised of alphahydroxy acids (AHAs), such as glycolic, lactic or fruit acids. Light chemical peels are ideal for people who want the benefits of a facial peel with no downtime.
Medium Chemical Peels
For medium facial peels, many professionals use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or Jessner’s solutions. These peels work well for treating fine surface wrinkles, superficial blemishes and pigmentation problems. Similar to the light chemical peel, medium depth chemical peels require less downtime than a deep peel.
Deep Chemical Peels
Deep chemical peels are the strongest of the facial peels and must be performed by a medical doctor. The chemical used for deep chemical peels is phenol acid. Deep peels are used to treat coarse facial wrinkles, blotches caused by aging or sun exposure, and pre-cancerous growths. While a deep chemical peel produces the most dramatic, longest-lasting results, the procedure takes longer than other peels (about two hours) and requires the most healing time.
What are the side effects of a chemical peel?
With light and medium peels, relatively mild chemical peel side effects such as redness, dryness and flaking usually subside within a day or two after the treatment. The side effects of deep chemical peels are typically more pronounced, and recovery time is longer. While more serious side effects, such as infection, are possible with deep chemical peels, these side effects are rare when a qualified doctor performs the procedure.
What sets PCA Skin® Peels apart?
PCA Skin® uses gentle, yet highly effective formulas to achieve results with little to no downtime. For example, our TCA solutions are blends formulated with many ingredients including lactic acid, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), plumping phytohormones and kojic & azelaic acids to produce dramatic results without the discomfort and downtime associated with traditional TCA peels. Research has shown that blended peels are a “win-win”: gentle on the skin while producing the desired results.
